Monacan Life
Detail of Bridge Mural
Crozet Virginia
Mural Design by Mr. Kirchman
Monacan Nation Web Site
This Mural was a project that Mr. Kirchman participated in with
John Pembroke and several art classes from the local high school.
The original scope was to create a 'historical mural' and the discovery
of a Monacan village in the Lickinghole Creek basin gave the project
three distinctive periods: Monacan, early settlement of the 'Big Survey'
and the more widely known 'coming of the railroad.'
So what is the woman doing with the tall basket? Fishing! The use of
fish weirs in the Western runs of Virginia is well documented and the
remains of some may still be seen in places. Since there is very little
written about the Monacans, we had to make some assumptions about
their way of life based on the ways of neighboring people.
