"Smith Island Sunset, Tylerton" By Laney Riley Greer

This painting is based on a photo taken by Laney on a service trip with St. John's Methodist Church in Staunton Virginia, to the group of little islands in the Chesapeak Bay of Maryland called Smith Island. She stayed on the island of Tylerton. On a walk she took this picture with the intention of painting it later. This little group of islands are sadly home to a dying community of fishermen. Their livelihood is based mostly on the crabbing industry which has been strictly regulated by the government in recent years due to overfishing. Many of the islands are also sinking and will someday no longer exsist. Therefore she felt it important to create a painting in honor of its people.

Mural art for young people's spaces that captures
the wonder of a child's imagination.
