Notice how the the National Arterial Highway System would be assigned on a regional level. Arterial 470 is the preferred route into Maryland that avoids Washington DC. US 29 becomes Arterial 83. Arterial 883 provides another alternative for heading North without travel on Interstate 495.
Arterial 97 creates another way North that avoids the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Following US 301, it would require improvements to be made at La Plata, Waldorf and Upper Marlboro in Maryland to restore it to arterial status. Maryland 3 and US 301 once were the preferred route for travel between Baltimore and Richmond.
Arterial 66 continues West from Interstate 81. It recognizes the 'Corridor H' improvements made in West Virginia, but allows for minimal disruption of the Virginia portion. Arterial 664 follows the VA 262 'super two' around Staunton and then follows US 250 to Elkins. Note that there is not a priority to widen this road, but safety improvements and a Shenandoah Mountain Tunnel [which would eliminate steep grades and sharp curves] is envisioned. The old route across the mountain becomes a scenic drive.
An Interstate 64 tunnel between Waynesboro and Crozet provides a safer crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains
