The National Arterial Highway System is designed to provide for needed upgrades well into the 21st Century. Here is a look at 2040. Arterial 83 has become a parallel route to Interstate 81 and has been upgraded to Interstate 83. A new Potomac River crossing near Point of Rocks [toll] takes traffic away from Interstate 495

Arterial 97 has become an interstate as well and continues on the existing 295 expressway around Richmond.

Arterial 66 has been connected to the Western terminus of the present Interstate 66 and upgrades as well. Arterial 664 remains minimally improved for environmental reasons.

Interstate 68 is now signed from Washington DC to Wheeling, West Virginia. [use your 'BACK' and 'FORWARD' buttons on your browser to see the improvements.
